Free expression is an important key to a thriving society; it is what according to positivepsychology is defined as “The way that we In reflectioshare ourselves is known as self-expression, and it turns out there are a lot of ways to do it. There are few “wrong” ways of expressing yourself, but there are some things you can do that give you a better chance of hearing and being heard than others.” (Ackerman, 2018)
However, it holds an intricate reflection to my personal value of freedom of speech. The law defines “As held by the first amendment, The First Amendment protects the freedom to peacefully assemble or gather together or associate with a group of people for social, economic, political or religious purposes. It also protects the right to protest the government. The right to petition can mean signing a petition or even filing a lawsuit against the government.” (History, 2017).
In my opinion, free speech is always worth protecting.
This is held and reflected by my favorite 2-part episode of my favorite show, South Park: (“Cartoon Wars”); in the climax of the story, the main protagonist, Kyle Broflovfski, declares to his nemesis Eric Cartman, that “Either all of it is okay, or none of it is”. (South Park, Cartoon Wars part 2, 2010). I believe that free speech is valued, and should be protected, should no voices be unheard of. It is our job as a society to hold up one another, and our right to free speech, as an individual as long as we are not seeking any harm on our fellow human beings. South Park reflects the concept of parrhesia which “describes the individuality to say what one pleases, to whom they please and how they want to say it”. (Bejan, 2019).
